"When you land, and this is something, I've been to India about four or five times in my lifetime and every time I go there there's a smell that I remember. In fact somebody brought in a little plant the other day, it was a blossom and it was the smell of India and I kept sniffing it. When you go there, you land, you come out of the plane and you can smell the mud, or we say mitee, the sand.
There's a lot of students, who come in, and you can see the difference in them, in their confidence. Sometimes they come in with their husbands and they don't say a word, and then within the second or third session in my ESOL* class they're talking away and feeling a lot more free, and laughing and joking and having fun with the other students. I think we have a lot of fun in the classes, I enjoy it. And to be able to learn to speak a little bit better in English, and to be able to communicate and just live is something we all take for granted. The women come here for one reason and then they get other, they get just a real sense of freedom, a sense of confidence is built in them and you can see it."
